Coil racking for carpet rolls and cable drums.

Carpet rolls, electrical cable drums, wire coils and industrial reels all share the same storage challenge — they are heavy, cylindrical and awkward to handle without the right racking. Rackstor UK supplies coil and cantilever racking systems built for these loads.

The storage challenge with rolled and coiled stock

Carpet rolls, cable drums and wire coils are some of the most awkward products in a warehouse. They are heavy — a full-width carpet roll can weigh 200 kg or more, and a large steel wire rope drum several tonnes — they are round so they cannot be safely stacked on flat surfaces, and they need to be dispensed from without unrolling the entire product. Purpose-built coil racking uses horizontal spindles or cradle arms to suspend rolls and drums at a working height, allowing lengths to be cut or dispensed while the roll remains secure. Cantilever racking with coil cradle arms provides the same function for lighter rolls without a through-spindle requirement.

Products stored on coil and cantilever racking

Carpet and flooring distributors store broadloom carpet rolls in widths of 3 m, 4 m and 5 m on horizontal spindle systems that allow rolls to be stored side by side and dispensed from the end. Commercial vinyl, LVT and safety flooring in roll formats are stored on similar systems. Electrical cable wholesalers and cable manufacturers store power cable drums, data cable reels and fibre-optic reels on coil racking systems with spindles sized for the drum arbour. Steel wire rope, lifting chain and industrial hose are stored on cantilever systems with cradle arms. Paper mill reels, packaging film and industrial foil are handled on heavy-duty coil systems with crane-loaded spindles.

Specifying coil and cantilever racking for rolled stock

Coil racking systems are specified around the maximum roll or drum diameter, the roll width or drum length, and the maximum weight per spindle or cradle. Spindle diameter must match the drum arbour for cable drums. Cantilever cradle systems for lighter rolls are specified with cradle width and arm capacity matched to the roll dimensions and weight. Rackstor UK carries out a free site survey and provides a fixed-price quotation for coil and cantilever systems for all rolled and coiled products.
